Updates

Jacob is now 11 months {and 6 days} old... I'll keep him under the age of ONE as long as possible.

He is a walking and climbing machine. He walks everywhere and can stand up on his own without pulling up on anything. He like to climb the stairs when given the opportunity. He babbles a fair amount and loves to say "uh-oh". He's working on eating table foods, his favorite is american cheese. He loves yogurt, banana puff and apple wagon wheels too. He drinks mainly from a sippy cup and only takes a bottle at night before bed, first thing in the morning {although this morning we went to the kitchen and he had a sippy, so morning bottles might be a thing of the past} and when it's a little bit more convenient for Mom and Dad. He likes to look at books, and lately has been favoring them over his other toys. We've taught him to play basketball {what other sport would you learn first when you live in KY???}, and he enjoys clapping after his ball goes through the hoop. We have had to postpone swimming lessons for now, but he still loves to play and splash in the bath.
He had his first haircut May 1 to get the hair out of his eyes. It's a little shorter than we were expecting, but the good thing about hair is it grows pretty fast on little boys!

Medical updates:

Monday {the 26th} we went to the ENT. Dr. Speach {aka Dr. Peach - as he requested Jacob call him} said Jacob's ears looked horrible, although there was no fluid in his ears. That, his ear infection history and allergic reaction to Omnicef prompted him to recommended tubes as soon as possible. So soon, he worked us in for last Friday {the 30th}. So Friday morning we work Jacob at 5:45am and headed to the surgery center, at 7:45 they took him back, and at 8:00 Dr. Speach came out to tell us everything had gone well. He did have fluid in his ears though - we wouldn't have had another ear infection. By 9:00 we were home and by 11:00 he woke up from a nap and was playing, full steam ahead. You wouldn't have known anything had happened that morning. He's still a little leery when you get close to his ears, but other than that he's doing great.

This Monday {the 3rd} we went to the allergist {in the same office as Dr. Speach}. Dr. K was concerned about his eczema and wheezing and did allergy testing on his back. Sure enough, a pretty severe allergy - to eggs. That was his main allergy, and it something he's probably been getting in small amounts without us knowing. I could have passed it to him when I was nursing and it could be why he had the eczema at a young age. I've started on a lot of research and found out that the egg allergy is the most commonly outgrown allergy {usually by 4 or 5} and Dr. K confirmed this. It also is the least likely food allergy to cause an anaphylactic response, rather most of the reactions are seen on the skin {such as his eczema}. So, I'm a label reading machine. We've already pulled the food from Jacob's cabinet that contains egg {Did you know most pasta does?? But not Kraft Mac & Cheese - we're good there!} and it has been returned to the grocery. I've started combing through our pantry, and so far most of the things we have are egg free. I've found the substitution for egg in recipes already and I'm going to be meeting with a dietician in the next week or two. I see lots of fruit, veggies and plain meats in Jacob's near future- just like his Daddy. One thing Pat and I are bummed about is parties/cook outs. For now Jacob is too young to know he'll be missing out on things like Birthday Cake, but in the coming years I hope he understands, and isn't too disappointed. We are very thankful though that while he has a severe food allergy that the allergic reaction shouldn't be a life threatening one. Praises for that! In the mean time, he has been prescribed an inhaler for his wheezing when it gets bad, and some other medicine to help get the eczema under control. We return in a month for follow up. He will be having an egg free diet for 1 year and then we'll retest annually.

Our little man has been put through the ringer, but it appears we have answers and were put into contact with some doctors who are knowledgeable and have taken swift action.
